DESCRIPTION:This meeting\, sponsored by SenseMed\, is designed to help edit
ors navigate the waters when working on technically challenging medical an
d biomedical science papers. We’ll discuss important questions such as:\n-
Should I approach the job differently if my client is a PhD/medical stude
nt or the supervisor/professor?\n- What are the client’s expectations?\n-
What will the text be used for (e.g.\, publication\, dissertation\, grant
proposal\, commercial applications)? \n- Do I have enough background knowl
edge to work on this text?\nDuring this 2-hour interactive meeting\, we’ll
look at some of the more challenging texts I’ve edited recently\, and we’
ll talk about different ways they can be tackled. And of course\, we’ll le
ave plenty of time for swapping war stories. No advance preparation is nee
ded.\nThe meeting will run from 16:30 to 18:30 (doors open at 16:00) and w
ill be held at restaurant Se7en in Utrecht\, just a short walk from Utrech
t Central Station. After the meeting\, I hope you’ll join us for drinks fo
llowed by dinner (both at your own cost). If you intend to stay for drinks
and dinner then please let me know by mail (c.barrett@englisheditingsolut
ions.com) when you register so that I can reserve enough space for us at S
e7en.\nAll current SENSE members are welcome to attend\, and because this
is sponsored by the SenseMed SIG\, the meeting is also open to guests/pros
pective members. Note that space is limited\, and registration will close
at 10:00 on 19 February (or when we reach the maximum). To register\, clic
k the “Register” button at the top of this page (if you’re logged in\, you
r details will be pre-entered).\nI look forward to seeing you in February.

DESCRIPTION:FINLEGSIG meeting: Thursday 20 February 2020\, 17:00 to 22:30\n
at John Alexander’s place – near Amsterdam Zuid railway station followed
by dinner in a nearby restaurant\nTony Parr on The Translator Before the
Beak\nTony Parr\, he of Teamwork who needs no further introduction\, has u
nearthed a civil case where a Dutch court was asked to rule on the quality
of a translation. Unanimously chosen at our last meeting at which Alison
Gibbs gave a stunning talk on editing\, thanks again\, Alison! Tony will t
alk to us about this at our first meeting in 2020.\nTony adds and\, in vie
w of the subject matter\, who’d dare translate it?:\nNet als een goede sch
eidsrechter valt een goede vertaling niet op. Een slechte vertaling wel. M
m\, this will be held at John Alexander’s place\, for venue details see be
low.\nDINNER\nFor those who so desire\, and for those who wish to join us
there later\, we will then walk to a nearby restaurant where will sit down
for dinner at about 7pm. We have selected L’Arena\, a tasty Italian estab
lishment on the Stadionweg.\nPlease note that SENSE neither subsidizes nor
pays for this dinner. Diners pay\, preferably using a card\, their share
of the final bill plus tip\, i.e. the final bill plus tip divided by the n
umber of diners – this to avoid debates about who chose/consumed what and
how much.\nSounds like fun so do come!\nNB: FINLEGSIG’s habit is to ask at
tendees to select the topic for the next meeting in spring/summer 2020. It
’s high time for a financial/insurance/accounting topic - all proposals we
 lcome. https://www.sense-online.nl/events/calendar/event/241-the-translato
