DESCRIPTION:Using reporting guidelines for biomedical research\nJennifer de
Beyer\, United Kingdom\nThis interactive introductory workshop aims to su
pport language professionals working with biomedical researchers to use an
d recommend reporting guidelines for manuscript preparation.\nReporting gu
idelines aid research article preparation by providing the minimum informa
tion needed for a particular study type. Many journals\, particularly in b
iomedical research\, require reporting guideline use and the submission of
a completed checklist alongside a manuscript. However\,researchers are of
ten unsure how to find and apply the right reporting guideline. Writers\,
editors\, and translators can help to ensure the research articles they wo
rk on are compliant.\nThe workshop will combine short presentations\, disc
ussion\, and practical exercises\, and will be accompanied by a handout. W
e will focus on reporting guidelines for research involving humans or anim
 als\, such as health research\, psychology\, and veterinary medicine.\nWor
kshop outline: \n\nWhat reporting guidelines are\, why they are needed\, a
nd how and when they can help.\nUsing reporting guidelines to analyse manu
scripts and flow diagrams. \nIdentifying biomedical study designs (explora
tory vs confirmatory\, descriptive vs analytic\, observational vs experime
 ntal\, qualitative vs quantitative\, longitudinal vs cross-sectional). \nC
hoosing an appropriate reporting guideline.\nTranslations of reporting gui
delines and opportunities to contribute to future translations. \nFitting
reporting guidelines into the workflow as writers\, author editors\, journ
als\, and peer reviewers. \nDealing with realities: common objections to r
eporting guidelines and problems encountered by participants.\n\nLearning
outcomes:\n\nUnderstand what reporting guidelines are and how to use them.
 \nBe comfortable identifying a manuscript’s study design\, recommending an
appropriate reporting guideline\, and highlighting missing information to
guide the author.\n\nClick the ‘Register’ button at the top of the page.
\nAbout the presenter\n \nAfter training in laboratory research and workin
g in academic editing\, Jennifer de Beyer joined the EQUATOR Network’s UK
Centre at the Centre for Statistics in Medicine (CSM)\, University of Oxfo
rd. Here she develops online and in-person training in academic writing an
d using reporting guidelines for clear\, transparent research reporting. S
he also provides editing and writing support for CSM’s team of medical sta
tisticians and methodologists. \nThe EQUATOR Network is an international i
nitiative dedicated to improving the quality and transparency of health re
search. It focuses on research reporting\, so that future research is base
d on a sound body of evidence. Through its four centres in the United King
dom\, Canada\, France and Australia\, EQUATOR raises awareness of reportin
g guidelines\, provides online resources\, develops education and training
\, and conducts research into research quality and transparency. \n https:
