DESCRIPTION:The next meeting of the SENSE Ed SIG for educators is scheduled
  for 19 May.\nDate: Saturday\, 19 May 2018Time: 1:30 pm to 5 pm (doors ope
 n at 1 pm for coffee/tea)Location: Park Plaza Hotel\, Utrecht\nThe topic f
or this meeting of the SENSE Ed SIG is Flipped Classroom Teaching with gue
st speaker Philip Springer.\nWe are pleased to welcome Philip Springer as
our guest speaker for this meeting. Philip holds a PhD in Linguistics and
has extensive teaching experience at both secondary schools and universiti
es. He is currently the coordinator for scientific English courses at the
Taalcentrum-VU in Amsterdam.\nAt the beginning of the current school year\
, VU University Amsterdam switched from using Blackboard as its online pla
tform to Canvas. This has brought about significant changes in the way tha
t the Taalcentrum’s courses in scientific English are taught. The advanced
functionalities of Canvas have made it possible to work for the first tim
e in a paper-free format. The added flexibility offered by Canvas also mad
e it possible to replace the previous lecture-style format with a flipped
classroom style. In this system\, lectures are de-emphasized in favor of d
oing exercises on the study materials that have been offered on Canvas dur
ing the previous week. Philip will have lots of information for you on how
this all works and the effects this system has had on the courses offered
by the Taalcentrum.\nThere will be time to discuss other topics at this s
ession\, so feel free to contact me about any subjects you would like to d
iscuss\, or material you wish to share.\nTo register\, simply click the 'R
egister' button at the top of the page.\nI look forward to seeing you on 1
 9 May\nKind regards\,\nDavid Barick\, Convener https://www.sense-online.nl
