DESCRIPTION:UniSIG came about after SENSE produced its Guidelines for proof
reading student texts\, which in turn were inspired by Australian guidelin
es for editing dissertations and theses. For the first UniSIG meeting of 2
021 we'll be going back to our Australian roots. We'll link up with IPEd A
mbassador Hazel Baker in Sydney\, Australia\, to hear about academic editi
ng in the Australian context. To accommodate Hazel's presentation of about
half an hour and allow us plenty of time for Q&A and discussion\, the mee
ting time has been extended to 90 minutes.\nHazel plans to begin with some
background on the Institute of Professional Editors Ltd.\, the organizati
on for professional editors in Australia and New Zealand. She will then ex
plain how IPEd's Guidelines for editing research theses came about and how
they've been received by Australian universities. She will also discuss a
cademic editing in practice in Australia\, including the types of document
s editors are asked to edit\, editors' responsibilities and the responsibi
lities of students and supervisors.\nHazel freelances as an academic edito
r and writing coach. She has worked in Africa\, the UK\, the USA and Austr
alia. As a Hebrew speaker and having studied English and French at univers
ity\, she describes herself on her website as being 'particularly skilled
at working with people who come from a non-English speaking background'.\n
All SENSE members are invited to attend this online event\, which will tak
e place in the morning of Friday 15 January from 10.00 h -11.30 h. Please
use the button above to register.\nRegistration will close at 09.00 h on 1
4 January and registered participants will be emailed the Zoom link to the
meeting.\nLooking forward to seeing you on the morning of 15 January! htt
