DESCRIPTION:Writers' Stretch & Tone\nMatthew Curlewis\, the Netherlands\nA
six-week workshop cycle for both advanced and beginner writers to stop thi
nking and start doing. Generate new work\, revise old work\, experiment wi
th form and style and generally keep your writerly muscles fit - all in th
 e company of other like-minded writers.\nFor this workshop\, whether you h
ave a story or a project already in process or not doesn’t matter. Writing
suggestions during the sessions will always give you somewhere to start.
Then it’s your choice whether you try out different voices and approaches
in a new piece of writing or you continue to develop a work already in pro
gress.\nBy the end of each session\, you will have created new work. You w
ill also have heard some fellow participants read their new work out loud
 - and sometimes you may have read out loud yourself. (Reading is always op
tional.) What will always remain is that thinking\, by itself\, doesn’t pr
oduce writing. Writing produces writing!\nTime is also made available\, wh
en requested\, to read and analyse participant manuscripts - no matter wha
t their form. This might mean reviewing short stories and essays\, at othe
r times screenplay excerpts or works still finding their form. Feedback is
given in two rounds:\n\nWhat's working? What's already good in this manus
cript?\nAre there any obstacles or confusions? Any suggestions on how to i
mprove this piece of writing?\n\nAt the culmination of six weeks\, your wr
iterly muscles will be stronger and more flexible\, and you will feel fitt
er as a writer. This in turn will give you greater confidence for taking o
n further or more complex writing challenges.\nCycle of workshops: six wee
 kly sessionsTuesday evenings from 22 September to 27 October\, 19:00 to 21
:30Spaces are limited to 10 participants maximum.  https://www.sense-onlin

DESCRIPTION:The next meeting of the SENSE Ed SIG will be held on Saturday 2
6 September from 14:00-16:00. This virtual meeting will be held via Zoom a
nd is titled KICKING OFF THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR.\nThis spring SENSE Ed met on
a regular basis to discuss the many challenges we were facing in having t
o make the hurried switch to online teaching. A few months down the line\,
we’re not out of the woods yet: it looks like we’ll be staying with virtu
al classrooms for some time to come. It thus seems appropriate to get toge
ther again after the summer break\, recap what we’ve experienced so far\,
and discuss new ways to meet the challenges ahead.\nTwo speakers will be o
n hand to assist us in this process. The first of them is Stephen Johnston
\, who needs no introduction to SENSE members. Most of us will have alread
y attended at least one of his entertaining and informative presentations
on copywriting and/or teaching. Stephen will be talking to us on the subje
ct of ‘Mistakes to Avoid When Using Zoom’. Nowadays\, a more appropriate t
opic could scarcely be imagined.\nOur second speaker is new to SENSE. Tom
Wigham is originally from the UK\; he completed his BA in Modern Languages
at the University of Oxford. He has lived in the Netherlands since 2011an
d holds an MA in Linguistics from the University of Groningen. He has work
ed as a language instructor in Amsterdam and most recently at the Universi
ty of Groningen\, where he teaches courses on academic writing and debate
skills. On this occasion\, Tom will be demonstrating a number of technique
s he has developed for providing effective feedback to students during a v
irtual class. In particular\, we will see how a teacher can use Google Doc
s to ‘look over the student’s shoulder’\, despite the physical distance be
 tween them. https://www.sense-online.nl/events/calendar/event/540-sense-ed
