Of course, you’ve spotted where Rob’s title comes from: our good friend Jean Baptiste Colbert, a French finance minister under Louis XIV, “the art of taxation consists in so plucking the goose as to obtain the largest amount of feathers with the least amount of hissing.”

Worry not, Rob won’t be reviewing the salt tax or other delights of seventeenth century French taxation. Rob will begin with a hypothetical company and how it is taxed by itself. Then he’ll describe what happens as it grows and starts to form a group, first domestically then internationally, what facilities and arrangements it can use to optimise its tax situation, and how it interacts with the tax authorities.

No need to hiss when Rob does the talking. Or to lose feathers. Rob spent three years working as an in-house translator for Meijburg & Co, where the translators and legal editors were part of the Vaktechniek department and worked closely with its tax lawyers. As a freelancer, he’s translated hundreds of tax texts for firms such as Meijburg, DLA Piper and Houthoff.

Appetite whetted? Do come. All are welcome but … there’s only space for 12 people. So please advise John Edmund Hynd at johnedmund51@gmail.com in advance by end Wednesday June 19th 2019 at the latest whether you’re planning to come.

Wine & modest nibbles will be (of course) served. The exact address is Minervalaan 42/2, 1077PB Amsterdam. Unless the weather is foul, or walking isn’t your thing, the simplest (if you’re coming from Amsterdam Zuid railway station) is to walk up straight up the Minervalaan into town towards the Hilton Hotel and it’s on your left after about 15 minutes. And, as an extra goody this year the ArtZuid open air sculpture exhibition (https://www.artzuid.nl/artzuid-2019/) is being held this year right along the route from the Amsterdam Zuid railway station to the meeting venue. So if you’ve got a bit of extra time, come early and enjoy the art as you mosey up the road. NB: if the entry doorbell doesn’t work, call John A on 06 53 22 12 12.
