The Translator Before the Beak

Tony Parr, he of Teamwork who needs no further introduction, has unearthed a civil case where a Dutch court was asked to rule on the quality of a translation. Unanimously chosen at our last meeting at which Alison Gibbs gave a stunning talk on editing, thanks again, Alison! Tony will talk to us about this at our first meeting in 2020.

Tony adds and, in view of the subject matter, who’d dare translate it?:

Net als een goede scheidsrechter valt een goede vertaling niet op. Een slechte vertaling wel. Maar in welk geval oordeelt de rechter dat de kwaliteit van een vertaling ondermaats is en in welk geval duidt die kwalificatie door de opdrachtgever slechts op een verschil van smaak? Tot nu toe was daar in Nederland (en zo lijkt, ook in het buitenland) geen rechtspraak over: dergelijke zaken waren altijd geschikt. Tot voor kort.

Duizenden exemplaren van het boek Beautiful Holland waren in diverse talen zo slecht vertaald, dat zelfs de Japanse afnemers ‘hun’ versie teruggaven en om het Engelstalige exemplaar vroegen. De uitgever heeft daarop het vertaalbureau aansprakelijk gesteld voor alle daardoor geleden reputatie- en omzetschade, maar vooral voor de (hoge) drukkosten van de vele onbruikbare exemplaren. Het oordeel van de rechter was op het eerste gezicht opmerkelijk, maar vooral voor zowel opdrachtgevers als vertaalbureaus en vertalers zeer leerzaam.

For those who so desire, and for those who wish to join us there later, we will then walk to a nearby restaurant where will sit down for dinner at about 7pm. We have selected L’Arena, a tasty Italian establishment on the Stadionweg.

Please note that SENSE neither subsidizes nor pays for this dinner. Diners pay, preferably using a card, their share of the final bill plus tip, i.e. the final bill plus tip divided by the number of diners – this to avoid debates about who chose/consumed what and how much.
