UniSIG: From telling to showing – editing personal grant applications

Tia Nutters and Hiske Feenstra, both grant proposal editors in the Talent Development programme at the University of Groningen, are our November speakers. Tia has a background in Translation Studies and English and Spanish language and literature. She is also lecturer in Translation Studies at Utrecht University. Hiske's background is in Middle English Studies; she is co-founder of The Skelton Project. They write:

'In our experience, most scientists know how to report on their research in, say, journal articles: they know how to "fill in" the more or less standard sections (introductions and backgrounds, methods and findings, etc.)

But what if they have to make their writing personal? Much of the work we do as grant proposal editors concerns moving our authors away from reporting results and towards a grant application that actually screams "give me the money”.

In grant applications, authors will, for example, have to show their uniqueness and how their research will benefit society. In this talk, we will share some examples of the writing advice we give that helps our authors to get their proposals funded.'

After their talk, there will be time for questions and discussion.
