Our first UniSIG meeting of 2022 features as speaker Linda Jayne Turner, a British editor and translator based in Prague. She focuses mainly on editing academic articles and books written in English, primarily by non-native speakers, helping these authors get their research published internationally. The majority of her clients are universities and research institutes alongside selected corporate and individual clients based in Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Poland and Italy, among others. Her main areas of specialization are social sciences, environment, economics, the history of science, and Irish studies.

In her talk, Linda will begin by explaining how she got into this line of work and first connected with the authors she edits. She will then speak briefly about the authors themselves and the type of texts she works on, comparing her clients in Germany with those in the Czech Republic. Linda will then touch on the thorny issue of university administration, sharing a few anecdotes about the red tape she has encountered when dealing with these institutions, particularly those in Germany. Finally, Linda will sum up her different experiences of editing for universities and research institutes in Germany and the Czech Republic, opening up a discussion on academic editing at large and how her work compares to that of SENSE members editing for researchers in the Netherlands.
