The next meeting of the Utrecht translation group will be the evening of Wednesday 9 May 2018 from 20:00-22:00 at the Park Plaza in Utrecht.  Attendance is free to all SENSE members, and prospective members too.

There won't be a text to translate as such, but you can prepare by taking a look at the following...

Contrast (a new teaching method for the arts)

We will discuss our experience, questions and conundrums working with a group of translators on a new educational text for the CKV (Art and Culture) course for HAVO and VWO. The book includes 8 chapters about various disciplines, such as dance, design and architecture. Some questions that have come up include:

  • Whether to use the active or passive voice
  • How to translate various sub-headings such as Vijf stromingen and Zes kenmerken or assignment titles Verkennen, Verbreden, Verdiepen and Verbinden
  • In the chapter on dance, correct translation of theaterdans, or vorstelling en vormgeving in the context of the elements of dance
  • How Dutch use of tenses differs from English usage
  • How to refer to the numerous illustrations
  • Being part of a large project not being coordinated by a translation agency
  • Requesting and giving feedback
