Marieke KrijnenJoin me for a session on the craft of copyediting beyond basic spelling and grammar checks! This session focuses on our craft and will show you why a human touch remains essential in our profession.

I’ve been an academic copyeditor for seven years, and the most satisfying part of my work is still fixing something that is unclear, that needs to be untangled, or that sounds ‘off’, and understanding why.

Learn how to fix common redundancy errors, be on the lookout for commonly confused terms, develop an antenna for ‘not only/but also’ and ‘either/or’ constructions, whose terms very regularly end up in the wrong places, learn how to cut overly long sentences or move parts of a sentence around to improve clarity, and more!

Drawing on my experience and training, I will share many examples, explain what is wrong with them, and show you how to fix it. I will also share resources you can consult if you’re interested in knowing more about these issues.
