Living in the Netherlands? Doing language work? Working in English?

Join the society for English-language professionals in the Netherlands!

What is SENSE, and what does SENSE do?

SENSE is a society for English-language professionals based in the Netherlands. We are a community of language workers who work from or into English, with a connection to the Netherlands.

Attend informal get-togethers

SENSE regularly hosts meetings (SIGs) for members based on region or special interest. These meetings can be in person or online.

Forum for members only

SENSE's web forum is where members can post questions, give answers, and chat with other members. There is also a jobs category where jobs are posted from potential clients who visited the SENSE website.

Get a mentor to guide you

SENSE has a mentoring programme whereby experienced SENSE members can help inexperienced members for a small fee (subsidized by SENSE).

Event calendar / agenda

Never miss an event! Discover upcoming webinars, workshops and social events on the SENSE Calender, or browse through the ones that you have missed.

Contact other members easily

SENSE members are encouraged to make contact with other members. That is what being in a society is all about. All SENSE members can search for or browse the list of current SENSE members.

Read our regular blog

SENSE members and guest authors post meeting reports and interesting articles on the SENSE Blog. It also represents an opportunity to budding copywriters to get their name on screen.

Guidelines for student texts

SENSE has prepared its own "Guidelines for Proofreading Student Texts" and a "Form to Confirm Proofreading Services". Download them free of charge.

Wow-worthy Words with Joachim Lépine

Wow-worthy Words with Joachim LépineWow!

Discover words that into-English translators never think to use (but should).

It’s easy to produce bland, generic, insipid translations that more or less get the meaning across (properly referred to in the field as ‘flapdoodle’). But it’s also a risky proposition, because you’re sure to leave your reader cold and unimpressed. Not to mention that it’s no fun.

If you want to spark joy, showcase your human value, wow your clients, and enthral your readers, you need to dare to use colourful real-life words that turn heads and move hearts – just like professional writers do every day.

Date: Friday 6 September 2024
Time: 15:00–17:00
Location: Zoom (we’ll send you the link beforehand)
Cost: SENSE members pay just €35 (make sure you’re logged in first!)

Tickets for non-members are €60. Tickets for our sister society members are €45 – please enter the discount code when you register for this event.

Please note: this meeting will not be recorded.

About Joachim LépineJoachim

Joachim (Joe) was born into a French-speaking family in Belgium and grew up in the US before moving to Quebec in 2006. When he took his first translation course – on a whim – he knew he had found his calling.

He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in translation and a master’s degree in education. In the ensuing years, he translated for a myriad of prestigious clients in Quebec and abroad.
