When readers of a literary translation encounter culture-specific elements they are unfamiliar with, do they appreciate having these explained – and if so, to what extent? I examined this question using a survey on a Spanish story that presented three translation options, ranging from no explicitation to substantial clarification. The survey was completed by 133 native speakers of English, including members of SENSE, many of whom explained their choices. What did they consider important, and what annoyed them?
