UniSIG - Writing at university: intellectual hard labour, educative proofreading and AI

Professor Harwood’s talk will draw on interviews he has conducted over many years with proofreaders, students, lecturers and English language teachers to investigate their views of the ethicality of proofreading texts students have written for assessment. From his research he concluded that it would be feasible for universities to arrive at a proofreading policy which would attract the consensus of the majority of stakeholders. However, the rise of AI and LLMs means that writers can now easily circumvent the restraints of an educative proofreading policy.

During his talk, Professor Harwood will discuss student writers’ use of AI and LLMs to produce writing to be assessed and UK universities’ response to the rise of AI. He will also consider whether, given the rise of AI, there is still a role for proofreading at university.

Registration for this Zoom meeting will close on Thursday 19 March at 18:00, and the link to the Zoom meeting will be emailed to all those who registered.
