"Remote Conference Interpreting" by Maha El-Metwally

Remote interpreting has different forms and it has been around since the 1970s. The pandemic gave it a big push forward and it is now an integral part of an interpreter’s work. In this talk, we will have an overview of remote interpreting and its implications for interpreters.

Maha El-Metwally is a conference interpreter for Arabic A, English B, French and Dutch C. In 2007, she founded Cultural Bridges in Birmingham, UK, through which she offers her services. She is accredited to the United Nations and the European Institutions. While Maha is based near Birmingham in the United Kingdom, she offers her services all over the world, whether in-person or remotely. She has interpreted in different settings for a wide variety of speakers and organisations. This includes heads of state and governments, summits, arbitrations, and visiting delegations.

Maha served as a Board member and member of the Membership Committee of ITI for six and nine years respectively. She also served on the Leadership Council of the ATA Interpreters Division for two years. Maha is associated with a number of universities in the UK and abroad where she contributes to the curriculum and gives professionalisation talks.
