As a language professional, how are you going to keep finding work in the age of AI, with quick and easy translations via GoogleTranslate, and copy writing with ChatGPT? How rough and ready or polished is an acceptable quality of text for your clients – or for your own standards? Do you feel challenged by reports like ‘Veen Bosch & Keuning, the largest publisher in the Netherlands, has confirmed plans to trial the use of artificial intelligence to assist in translation of commercial fiction’ (The Guardian, 4 Nov 2024). What real options do you have to diversify?
I will conduct a survey of SENSE members (in the next few months) to find out what they are already doing, or considering doing, with respect to safe-guarding their work and incomes, and I will report on the results at the Jubilee. I will use examples from the agricultural industry to show just how much things have changed there in past decades and how broadly we should be thinking about our professional futures.
I hope this will lead to a lively discussion on options and tips, and offer concrete ideas for participants to go away and develop. This discussion may also lead to points for how SENSE can accommodate the changes people foresee occurring in their future working lives.
