Jenny 2The language profession is currently undergoing major changes, largely due to the advent of Generative AI. It’s affecting the whole profession, from editors to translators and from copywriters to proofreaders: Gen AI claims to have solutions for everyone, and many clients think they can manage without trained language professionals: we’ve all seen the results, some acceptable, some make us laugh.

It's quite easy to spot texts written or translated by AI. People who don’t know any better think these texts are ‘good to go’ and don’t even ask a professional linguist or native speaker to take a look. But we know that AI generated texts are repetitive, bland, and lack creative appeal, and that Gen AI translations are often inaccurate and inconsistent.

On the other hand, some Gen AI tools can save us time, just as our favourite editing and translation tools do. Despite these developments, there is still a huge market for us language professionals.

If we as language professionals are to survive and thrive in the age of Gen AI, we need to adjust our mindset and develop our entrepreneurial spirit. We need to adapt our working practices and our business models, grow professionally, and ensure we enjoy what we do.

In this talk, we’ll look at the skills and qualities that language professionals need to survive and thrive in the age of Gen AI. Drawing on more than 25 years’ experience, I will share ideas and tips on how to add value and go above and beyond in our work so that clients appreciate our contribution and will know the difference between a human in control and a human in the loop.

This talk will be of interest to all language professionals at any stage of their career who want to survive and thrive in the age of Gen AI, make their working life less stressful, and enjoy life at and away from their desks!
