In this talk, Brian Mossop will be touching on a variety of ways in which translators engage in editing, including mentally editing poorly written source texts, editing Translation Memory output, self-editing while drafting and after drafting the translation, and revising the work of others. He will take a historical look at the process whereby the amount of editing translators do has been increasing while the amount of composing (writing on a blank area of the page or screen) has been decreasing.
Mossop will also present a ‘philosophy’ of revision, i.e. some general principles to guide revision work, and we will do a few short exercises related to these principles.
About Brian Mossop
Brian Mossop has worked as a translator, reviser, and trainer for the Canadian Government’s Translation Bureau for more than 35 years. He has also taught revision, scientific translation, and translation theory at the York University School of Translation in Toronto for more than 30 years.
Mossop is author of the book Revising and Editing for Translators (2007).
