22 November 2009: Annual Social Event

Architecture, calligraphy, books, food, drink, good company... in short, something for everyone!

Date: 22 November 2009

TIme: 1:15 p.m.

Location: The Hague

Contact: John Edmund Hynd

This year we will start out by offering members and partners a closer look at the Tram Tunnel designed by Rem Koolhaas in 2004 for which see: http://www.oma.eu/index.php?option=com_projects&view=portal&Itemid=10&id=183. Our very own SENSE chair, Pieter Melville, will be on hand from 2.30 onwards to explain a little more about this amazing architectural project.
Then we will make our way to Prinsessegracht 30 where Winnifred Dijkstra has promised us our very own guided tour of the collection of rare books held at the so-called Museum of the Book otherwise known as Museum Meermanno-Westrenianum for which see: www.meermanno.nl. There are places for 20 people on the guided tour, to start at 3 p.m. after which we can explore the attic where they have a medieval scriptorium and someone on hand to give us a quill and teach us all about calligraphy - always handy for those intimate dinner parties when you want to provide your guests with handwritten place settings. No need to worry about the entry fee or the calligraphy class, as SENSE will pay for these.
Having used these two hours profitably in catching up with what all of our colleagues are doing, a pleasant stroll to Frederickstraat 32 lies before us, with free Sunday parking for those coming by car, where, from 6 p.m. onwards, Michiel and his team will be waiting to welcome us with a glass of Argentine bubbly at Plato's Restaurant for which see: www.restaurant-plato.nl. The cuisine is described in Frommer's as "international" and with a substantial three-courser for €32.50 a head, who could complain? Vegetarian, fish and meat dishes are all on offer and we have the use of the conservatory that can seat 35 of us comfortably - nothing like a private dining room, I always say. In keeping with tradition, SENSE has agreed to pay for the wine.
Members wishing to join us for the Annual Social Event please let me know fairly soon if you will be coming to the dinner at Plato's Restaurant alone or with a partner or friend and whether we can expect you at the Museum of the Book as well.
